Define term solution . How many types of solutions are formed ? write briefly about each type with an example.

the homogeneous solution of two substances is called a solution.

Solute and solvent are the two parts of a solution .

Solvent :- it is the component of the solution which is present in large amount.

Solute :- it is the component of the solution which is present in small amount.

Classification on the basis of amount of solute particles:-

  1. Unsaturated solution :- in this kind of solution more solute particles can be dissolved into the solution at the same conditions of temperature and pressure.
  2. Saturated solution :- in this kind of solution more solute particles can not be dissolved into the solution at the same conditions of temperature and pressure.
  3. Super saturated solution:- In this kind of solutions , the solute particles are dissolved in excess amount, that is more than that of the saturated solution.

Types of solution on the basis of state of solute and solvent.

  1. solid (solute) in solid(solvent) = Alloys
  2. solid in liquid solution = sugar solution
  3. gas in gas = air (21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen)
  4. liquid in solid = Amalgam (mercury with metal)
  5. Solid in gas = camphor in nitrogen gas
  6. Liquid in gas = water vapours in air
  7. Gas in liquid = carbonated beverages
  8. Liquid in liquid = Alcohol in water
